Zaven Collins Scouting Profile

"Edged size but plays like a safety. Still learning to anticipate but when he reads it he fires downhill with abandon."

Strengths:

Big, fast LB that plays like a safety and can run with most all TE's and RB's. Sudden mover and covers space quickly. Attacks downhill with abandon.

First step quickness off the edge is a handful. Technique sound with his long arms to stay free. Impressive ball skills and rarely drops a catchable pass. Great motor.

Weaknesses:

Play strength is poor for his size. Crashes into traffic and isn't the greatest at breaking down in space. Gets blocked and doesn't regularly win the physical confrontations. Opportunistic but instincts are hit and miss.

Overall:

Collins has prototypical edge size at 6'4 260 but he really plays like a safety. His suddenness and speed in space are impressive. That said, his instincts and physicality aren't as good as the production and size indicate.

He's best in space or allowed to attack downhill in free lanes. Despite his active hands and long arms he doesn't fare well in physical confrontations and gets held up consistently in traffic. On the edge he wins with suddenness, length and hustle but I don't think he can live there. He's an open field player that's best firing to the ball.
