"Framed up, threatening runner/passer with grit. Possesses an NFL arm but isn't a special arm talent and requires a strong dose of seasoning in a more sophisticated offensive scheme"
Strengths:
Well framed, strong, runner thrower with grit. Has good mechanics, footwork and a quick delivery. Can make every throw. Solid down field accuracy and timing. Dangerous, rugged runner/scrambler with elusiveness.
Generally avoids critical mistakes and manages the game. Gets adequate zip on the ball and can throw strikes in clutch situations. Notable toughness. Reputed best in class pre-draft interviewer.
Weaknesses:
Isn't a special arm talent and gets increasingly inaccurate and mistake prone in crowded pockets. Eyes drop after the first read. Streaky passer and decision maker.
Rarely throws in the towel and absorbs a good share of punishment in and out of the pocket. Coming of an ACL injury. College offense doesn't translate well to the pros. Overaged. (25)
Overall:
Hooker, at his best, is a game managing passer and threatening runner. He's got a requisite NFL arm and doesn't have any glaring weaknesses in his mechanics or footwork. He's shown the ability to exploit lapses in a defense and avoid leaving plays on the field.
As a runner, he's physical, stronger than he appears, and has solid burst and elusiveness. He runs angry, which is double edged for a QB. He tends to absorb unnecessary punishment and is now coming off a blown knee.
Vol's offense rarely required 2nd or full field reads and Hooker typically turned into a RB if what he wanted wasn't there. In his limited attempts to hang in the pocket, more so as a senior, the results were usually messy.
He's got starting potential as a legit dual threat QB but the clock is ticking and he's entirely unfamiliar with the complexities of a pro offense.
